Finding the MPAN (Electricity)

A Meter Point Administration Number or MPAN relates to Electricity supplies only. MPAN’s are split into two rows, 8 digits on the top with 13 digits on the bottom. These are separated as shown:

The MPAN number is a unique number given to every meter in the UK. It is normally displayed in a box with 3 smaller boxes on the top row and 4 smaller boxes on the bottom row.

The MPAN always begins with a big letter S though this is not part of the MPAN. An electricity MPAN number will consist of 21 Numbers and No letters.

When submitting the MPAN number onto the Online Application form please enter the whole 21 numbers from the MPAN starting with the top row, left to right and then the bottom row.

All the numbers in the MPAN mean different things. The only ones you really need to know are the following...

The Top Left hand number gives indication as to the meter type, ranging from 00 - 08. This tells us how the meter is set up to charge the client for their energy.

The client may be on a single tariff, a day and night tariff or even a day, evening and weekend tariff. This will be indicated by this number.

Meter Profiles

The electricity profile class is based on the business's electricity consumption pattern and profile.
The amount of energy that the business uses and when it uses it will determine which profile class the business is placed in.

In the UK there are currently 9 classes 01-08 and 00. Here’s what each of them means:

Profile Class 01 –
Domestic Unrestricted Customers - Most home consumers fall into this category. If your client runs a home based business they generally don’t need to buy a business electricity plan (although they may save money by having a business tariff). We do not currently provide domestic energy brokerage, so if it is a house with no business running from it, we are unable to help.

Profile Class 02
Domestic Economy 7 Customers - Home consumers with an Economy 7 meter fitted. Economy 7 meters are meters that have 2 meter readings which are usually designed to give cheaper energy at night. These meters usually give lower energy costs if there is Economy 7 heating fitted in the property as Economy 7 heating uses lots of energy at night. We do not currently provide domestic energy brokerage, so if it is a house with no business running from it, we are unable to help.

Profile Class 03
Non-Domestic Unrestricted Customers - Non electricity intensive, small and micro-businesses will generally fall under this category. A lot of small businesses that you speak to will potentially have this meter profile and will have either pay
  • Single rate of Electricity.
  • Day rate / Evening & Weekend rate.
You can find out if they pay different rates by looking at the bill. If there are 2 rates of electricity then they will usually have a high usage on an Evening/Weekend and pay less for energy in that period as it is not peak time.

We are able to price these meter profiles within 3 - 5 working days.

Profile Class 04
Non-Domestic Economy 7 Customers - Small and micro-businesses with an Economy 7 meter. Businesses under this profile will pay different rates for their energy, some of them are as follows
  • Day rate / Night rate.
  • Day rate / Evening & Weekend rate.
  • Day rate / Evening & Weekend rate / Night rate.
There are a lot of businesses that have this meter profile, as they are able to utilize very low energy rates at off peak times. We are able to price these meter profiles within 3 - 5 working days.

Maximum Demand (MD) customers

Businesses with profiles 05-08 are referred to as Maximum Demand (MD) customers. If the business falls into this category the meter will have the ability to measure peak demand for a given period.

The key metric is Peak Load Factor (LF), which is defined as the percentage of consumption (in kWh) during a given period relative to the number of kWh that would have been supplied had the maximum demand been maintained throughout that period.

Profile Class 05
Non-Domestic Maximum Demand (MD) Customers with a Peak Load Factor (LF) of less than 20%.

Profile Class 06
Non-Domestic Maximum Demand (MD) Customers with a Peak Load Factor (LF) between 20% and 30%.

Profile Class 07
Non-Domestic Maximum Demand (MD) Customers with a Peak Load Factor (LF) between 30% and 40%.

Profile Class 08
Non-Domestic Maximum Demand (MD) Customers with a Peak Load Factor (LF) over 40%.

Profile Class 00
Non-Domestic Maximum Demand (MD) Customers with a Peak Load usage of over 100,000 kWh. These are called Half hourly meters. There is more information on half hourly meters later in this training.

Area Codes

The bottom left hand number gives indication as to the location of the meter. There are a total of 14 different area codes ranging from 10 to 23.

All the different area codes have different prices which is why it is important for us to know which area code your client is in.

Make Sure - When submitting the MPAN number onto the Online Application form please enter the whole 21 numbers from the MPAN starting with the top row, left to right and then the bottom row.

Area Codes

You do not need to remember these numbers or area codes, but this is the list of UK Energy Distributors and the area that they cover.

So if you find an energy bill with area code 10 in the MPAN you know that the client is in the "East of England" region.
